Around The World
For a while, Sue and I have been talking about taking an extended trip around the world. But something was holding us back. It’s probably the usual: Fear of the unknown; fear of disappointing parents who would rather you have kids and buy a house; fear of losing money or social status. Or maybe it’s money – following your dreams is extensive, no? These all seem like reasonable thoughts. Why risk a good career step up for a year or two without income? Why go against this grain, throw off great paying jobs in the middle of a recession and “throw” money away on flights and travel?
Now, go watch the opening clip from the movie Up. The movie Up has some great scenes but none of them are as powerful as this one. Or as illustrative at just how easily life can pass you by, even when you have the best of intentions to make the most of it. Life is fleeting. Life is short. So, ask yourself again, what is really holding you back? Does it still feel that scary.

I’ve decided that what was holding me back – fear, money, social pressure – none of them are strong enough to hold me back from taking a truly life altering trip. So, starting in November 2011, Sue and I will be leaving our jobs and traveling around the world for a year. I refuse to be the old man in the movie. I’m not going to wait around any longer, watching the future go by.
Destinations
We’ve decided to spent a bunch of time in a number of areas of the world, avoiding the more expensive locations such as Europe, North America and Japan. Since Sue and I have already been to India, we won’t be traveling back there in order to spend more time in South East Asia, Africa and South America. Here is our currently planned trip path for the first leg of our trip (all destinations minus South America)

- Vietnam
- Cambodia
- Thailand
